It's a long time since I was in the Brownies ....

.... but I was back earlier this week, visiting the ‘pack’ at Charleston Community Centre, Dundee.  The task?  Spreading the word on the Save the Arctic campaign to a bunch of girls eager to take part in the Flag for the Future competition.  Greenpeace International has teamed up with the World Association for Girl Guides & Girl Scouts to encourage young people to design a flag to accompany the Arctic scroll.  This is a virtual scroll, a collection of names of all those signed up to Save the Arctic, which Greenpeace will bury at the bottom of the ocean at the top of the world!  The flag will be a symbol of hope, peace and global community.

We quickly did the ‘penguins in Antarctica, polar bears in the Arctic’ bit, and moved on to look at slides of cute (and not so cute) Arctic animals.  The girls were very knowledgeable about snowy owls and even the Arctic fox, and certainly weren’t fooled by the cuddly-looking polar bears.  After answering LOTS of questions and setting them to work with crayons & felt pens,  I came away with twelve mini masterpieces for sending off to Greenpeace International.  Thank you and well done to all the Brownies and their leaders!
