Last week a couple of us went along to the constituency surgery of Mark Lazarowicz MP (Labour, Edinburgh North and Leith) to hand over the Go Beyond Oil cards we had collected from his constituents over the last few months.
Mark was interested to hear what we had to say regarding the Energy Bill which is presently going through Parliament and the areas in which it needs improvement to be a truly green bill. From hidden subsidies for nuclear power and provisions to allow deep water drilling in UK waters to poor ‘Green Deal’ home insulation measures and a failure to adequately encourage and support renewable energy generation, this currently looks like a dirty bill to us.
During our meeting Mark pointed out that as he is an opposition MP and also a shadow minister for international development, his opportunities to improve the Energy Bill are somewhat limited. However, he did say that he saw that there was a potential for him to try to make the bill better as issues surrounding international development are in many ways closely related to climate change.
Mark has a track record of working in Parliament on climate change and renewable energy, which he is proud to promote on his website. We hope he will continue to do this for the Energy Bill this year, and help make it truly green and sustainable.
