Five reasons why we love going to the Dumfries Environment Fair

Greenpeace volunteers, face painting and pod colouring in at the Dumfries Environment Fair 2013!

Even though it means we have to leave Edinburgh before 7am to get there and we don’t get home until well into the evening, we’ve been going all the way down to the annual Dumfries Environment Fair regularly for the last few years. Why do we put ourselves through this time and again? Here are just five of our top reasons why:

1. We get our face painting practice for the year in! From the moment we set up the table to the close of the fair, we have a queue for face painting all day, which we do in exchange for donations to Greenpeace. This year we received over £60 in donations, which was fantastic.

2. People are always so interested in our campaigns. While people queue up with their kids for face painting, they’ll always chat to us about our current campaigns and are more than happy to sign any petitions we have running. This year we were talking about the Save the Arctic campaign and our fundraising drive for a new survival pod.

3. There are so many fantastic local environmental groups in Dumfries that we get to meet! By meeting people from groups interested in looking out for bats, butterflies, birds and a whole load more, we always have an interesting and informative day.

4. The people who organise the event are so lovely and friendly.  We’re always made to feel so welcome by everyone involved, who make such a fun and family-friendly event go so smoothly every year.

5. There’s no Greenpeace group in Dumfries (yet!) At the moment there’s no local Greenpeace group in Dumfries, so it’s great to have an outreach presence there once a year. Whilst there’s no group yet, we’d love to see one start in Dumfries, so if you think you might be able to help make this happen, please do get in touch via getactive.uk@greenpeace.org!
