I'm feeling some bad 'VIBES' about this ...

An activist dressed as a polar bear is taken away by police in Edinburgh earlier this year as part of a direct action to try and halt Shell's plans to drill in the Arctic

Every now and again you read something, and you just think, 'What on Earth were they thinking?'

Today was the awards ceremony for the VIBES Environmental Business Award, and Shell were shortlisted in not just one, but two categories. Although fortunately they did not win either award, the fact that they managed to get into the shortlist is astonishing.

The VIBES Awards are supposed to be open to "any Scottish based business that contributes to the sustainable development of Scotland in some way". How they thought that this could possibly be the case considering Shell's current plans to drill for oil in the senstive and pristine Arctic region is beyond my understanding.

Greenpeace are campaigning against Shell and other companies who want to drill for oil in the Arctic to try and protect one of the most important and fragile areas of the planet. In my opinion, Shell simply cannot be called a 'green' business until it abandons its quest for oil in this region.

Environmentally friendly business and Arctic drilling are simply incompatible. Whilst I am, of course, very glad that Shell did not win the award in the end, the very fact that they were even shortlisted for the prize should give VIBES pause for thought.
