Return from Copenhagen

Posted by Barry D - 17 December 2009 at 5:19pm - Comments

What seemed like a tortuous trip to Copenhagen ended at 2pm on Tuesday as Jake Wilson and myself arrived back home after travelling with Friends of the Earth Scotland. The spirit and atmosphere in Copenhagen were tremendous as we participated in The Flood for Climate Justice followed by a 6km march to the Bella Conference Center from the city. It was a total carnival with 100,000 people participating, many dressed in weird and wonderful costumes. There were wagons carrying props and playing music. All in all it was an incredible day. Unfortunately the day was marred by disruption from anarchists and anti-capitalists, which led to the arrest of about 900 people. But nobody's spirits were dampened and the vast majority of marchers were able to reach the Bella Center.

Greenpeace were there of course with their own impressive props - in particular a giant inflatable snowman, shown here!

Given the current farce that is surrounding the talks at the moment, an inflatable turkey would not be out of place floating above the Bella Center, where the talks are being held, along with a couple of lemons and a pink elephant!

I can just visualise the similarity with the front cover of the Pink Floyd album Animals.

Negotiators - 3 different kinds anyone?

Me? Well I've been cutting back on my emissions...
