Over 1000 people gathered a few steps away from Hinkley Nuclear Power Station (Sommerset) on Sunday the 11th March 2012 for another successful blockade, actually the largest anti-nuclear action since 1979! The event carried throughout the weekend, with the Chernobyl and Fukushima’s memory echoing in the air. For 24 hours the traffic in and out of the power station’s main entrance was interrupted by non-violent protesters. Speakers included Caroline Lucas, from the Green Party; environmental campaigner Jonathan Porritt; an evacuated Japanese couple from the area of Fukushima, Makoto and Akiko Ishiyama; and a Stop Hinkley spokesman Crispin Aubrey. The event officially ended at 2 pm on Sunday with a prayer performed by Japanese Buddhist monks for the victims of Fukushima, with the hope that wiser decisions will enlighten our future than noclear!
