Oil exploration could impact iconic world heritage site

Posted by Barry D - 4 February 2011 at 2:20pm - Comments

It seems that once again the oil industries chronic disregard for the planet is as transparent as ever. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is the Verungo National Park. It became the first site in Africa to be designated a World Heritage Site. It is an area of high biodiversity.

In recently Greenpeace has actively campaigned against illegal logging and deforestation and WWF has been active in promoting conservation in the area. Recently WWF launched a petition aimed at raising awareness of the potential damage that oil exploration could have in the area. It is aimed at the two UK based companies Dominion and SOCO, who will be undertaking the exploration project in the area.

We have seen the impacts of oil exploration in other parts of Africa e.g. Nigeria. I think Greenpeace should take note of what is happening here as part of the 'Go Beyond Oil' campaign.

Tried to upload image, but no joy.
