Remembering Chernobyl and Fukushima

Posted by jakobovich - 3 May 2011 at 5:25pm - Comments

The Glasgow Group has had a couple of street stalls recently for the Go Beyond Oil Campaign, most recently in Byres Road in the West End immediately before a talk organised by Scottish CND on the Fukushima disaster by Dr. Ian Fairlie.  Dr. Fairlie gave a sobering account of the continuing health effects for the people of Belarus and the Ukraine from the Chernobyl disaster 25 years ago, and highlighted the uncertainty and lack of information about the situation in Japan.

It is all the more important that the Energy Bill currently going through parliament, and the Finance Bill being used to provide subsidies for the nuclear industry by the back door, be amended to reflect the importance of providing a level playing field for renewables.

 The Energy Bill should:

  •  Drive a nationwide home energy efficiency revolution with strong regulation to ensure every home is brought up to minimum insulation standards.
  • Introduce long-promised regulation to drive down pollution from coal and gas stations through emissions performance standards.
  • Give a new role to local councils to do their bit to meet Britain’s emissions reduction targets.
  • Overturn outdated rules that give priority access to the seabed to oil and gas companies over offshore wind farms.
  •

You can find more ideas for writing to your MP and taking action on this page.

An MP3 audio interview with Dr. Ian Fairlie can be found here.
