AWE (Atomic Weapons Establishment)

Posted by Richard Martin - 20 August 2009 at 12:25pm - Comments

AWE Aldermaston in Berkshire, is the home of the UK’s nuclear bomb factory. Responsible for the design, manufacture and support of nuclear warheads.

Since 2002 AWE has been busy expanding these facilities, despite the lack of official decision that the UK will be building more nuclear weapons. The construction of the Orion Laser and the investment of £5 billion of taxpayers money suggests that AWE is pretty confident that that decision will get taken, in violation of the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty and the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty.

In 2008 the UK government sold its last remaining shares in AWE to the American company Jacobs Industry who along with Lockhead Martin and Serco now own 100% of the facility.

The Aldermaston Womens Peace Camp maintain a constant vigil at the site, who along with CND marches (1958), Trident Plowshares, Greenpeace weapons inspectors, Block the Builders, more CND marches (2008), church leaders, Nukewatch and every rational human being say no to new nuclear weapons.
