Dungeness nuclear power station(s)

Posted by Richard Martin - 27 July 2009 at 4:39pm - Comments

Dungeness is the site of two nuclear power stations, one of which is still operational generating up to 1100MW, while the other is slowly being decommissioned.

The french company EDF, the owners of the existing power station; have asked for Dungeness to be included as a potential site for a new nuclear power station.

The shingle beach that form the peninsula is constantly eroding at an estimated 6m per year and a fleet of Lorries is used to continuously maintain the sea defences, moving around 30,000 cubic metres of shingle per year.

Various local groups are campaigning to close the existing plants, to highlight the transport of nuclear waste across the marsh, and to oppose the construction of any new nuclear power stations
