Loz and Sue went to London on Friday 30th July to visit BP’s London headquarters
in St James’s Square near Pall Mall.
This is Loz’s description of the day.
Sue and I went up to London a bit early, but this gave us time to take in a classical music concert in St Martins in the Field. We took with us our “No Tar Sands” posters. These posters were covered with messages to BP from the Bristol public expressing concern about Canadian tar sands. We stuck our posters to boards to make them easier to display. We then met up with protesters from 6 other Greenpeace groups and were briefed.
After a spot of lunch we got our stuff together and started to walk to BP HQ, stopping on the way for the Greenpeace photographer to take some pictures. We stopped outside the Canadian High Commission at Canada House in Trafalgar Square and their security guard didn’t like us or our banners!
We then proceeded to BP and when we got there we hung our posters on the rails outside the building. We also hung posters of all the Greenpeace group names that had been there during the 3 weeks of the protest. We stood around the entrances handing out leaflets to passers by, BP employees and anyone else leaving the building.
At the end of the day, group members handed the posters over to BP’s Communications Department with token local gifts from the groups present. Our gifts from Bristol were a small plaque of the Clifton Suspension Bridge and a tea towel to mop up mess.
This was the final day of the 3 weeks of rolling vigils outside BP HQ attended by 42 Greenpeace groups from across the UK.
