Shell’s announcement that they are scrapping their oil drilling programme for this year is great news for the Arctic, the climate and to all of you who helped shine a spotlight on their shoddy Arctic drilling operation. But the campaign to #SaveTheArctic is far from over.
Shell is describing this as a ‘delay’ to their Arctic drilling plans [Telegraph] so we need your help to pile on the pressure to persuade them to cancel their plans for good. This weekend Greenpeace volunteers are organising a series of peaceful, legal protests at selected Shell petrol stations around the UK. I’d like to invite you to join them.
If you’ve never taken part in an event like this, then don’t worry. This is a safe, easy and legal way to get involved in Greenpeace campaigning. We won’t be asking you to chain yourself to anything, simply to spend a couple of hours protesting – holding banners and placards, handing out leaflets and talking to passers-by. This can really make a difference and Shell are undoutably watching, so the more the merrier. Please join your nearest protest in:
- Scotland (Glasgow) - Greenpeace volunteers from Edinburgh and Glasgow join forces
- Wales (Swansea) - while Welsh supporters organise something perfectly formed
- North West (Preston) - local Greenpeace folk have something to say to Shell
- Yorkshire (York) - brought to you by the Yorkshire massive. From Sheffield to York to ....
- West Midlands (Stourbridge) - Greenpeace groups and networks in action
- East Midlands (Nottingham) - not be outdone, Nottingham folk take the lead
- North London (Whitechapel) - Six north London Greenpeace networks visit Whitechapel
- South London (Croydon) - while five London Greenpeace networks head south
- South Coast (Ringwood) six coastal networks working in harmony
- South Central (Oxford)- Greenpeace folk from Oxfordshire and Berkshire converge
- South East (Tunbridge Wells) - from Brighton to Canterbury the Southeast rendervouz
- South West (Bristol) - the Bristol massive (30+ people last time) swing into action
- South West (Cornwall) - and the most southernly of the English protests - please join us
In July Greenpeace organised a similar ‘Shellday’ in the UK and for nearly 300 people this was their very first taste of Greenpeace campaigning. It takes a bit of courage to take that first step, to get in touch with a local coordinator and to say you want to help. Once you’ve done so then I can promise you’ll never look back, and it’s an amazing feeling to be able to help #SaveTheArctic through simple, legal, local campaigning events.
So please get in touch with a local coordinator and join your local protest on Saturday.
P.S. Please also bring friends, family, your own creative (polite) messages to Shell and whatever you can think of to make this a fun, family friendly way to #TellShell to cancel their Arctic drilling plans for good - an entire Samba band turned up to a protest in London last time....
