Purely by chance I just discovered that it was Volunteers’ Week in the UK from 1st – 7th June. Oops, missed it. Not very impressive for someone who supports volunteers for a living.
My paltry excuse is that I was away from Friday – Tuesday on a fabulous whale-watching holiday in Mull, Scotland. And yes, without wanting to brag, we did see whales – two Minke Whales, one of them right up close to the boat, several basking sharks filtering the plankton with their huge mouths wide open, and lots and lots of seals, porpoises and seabirds. Fantastic!
But I digress.
Despite having missed Volunteers’ Week, I think it would be timely to say a little thank you to all the volunteers across the UK, and indeed across the world, who make Greenpeace tick. Whether you’re baking cakes to raise money, lobbying your MP, putting pressure on companies like John West and Mattel through our campaign network or taking nonviolent direct action, we couldn’t do it without you.
If you’re not actively involved yet, why not take the plunge now?
Getting active with your local network is a great way to make a positive difference to the world we live in and it’s really good fun too. What other organisation would have you setting up a Barbie treasure hunt as part of a campaign to protect Indonesian rainforests?
If that’s not your cup of tea, how about fundraising? You can do this on your own or with friends and family, and your imagination is your only limit.
You could become a trained lobbyist – visiting and writing to MPs and corporate managers to influence decision makers.
Or you could become a cyberactivist, taking action online and spreading our campaign messages through the digital world via Facebook and Twitter.
Whichever takes your fancy, get involved now – I don’t think you’ll regret it!
