Below is a simple 3 step guide to organising your very own Greenspeaker talk.
First let’s start with an overview of what Greenspeaker talks cover:
Greenspeakers are long-term Greenpeace volunteers who are trained to give general presentations about Greenpeace – our history, what we campaign on and why, our campaign methods and how people can help. The speakers do not usually give campaign/issue specific talks but will be able to give a campaign overview plus more general information about the organisation.
As the speakers have all been actively involved with Greenpeace for several years, they often also talk about their personal experiences and involvement as well.
The talks are aimed at adults (16+). Presentations usually last about 30-40 minutes and we always try to allow time for questions afterwards.
1. First get an idea of the following details:
Venue
Perhaps your group already has a venue, but if not try your local community centre, church, or pub. We have also given talks to small groups of friends in peoples homes!
Projector and screen
This is not essential, so don’t panic if you can’t get your hands on one! However, having the ability to show photos and videos does make the talk much more engaging.
2. Then contact us:
Once you’ve provisionally organised the above and have a few potential dates in mind then please get in touch with us to confirm a speaker: greenspeakers.uk@greenpeace.org
Locations currently covered by trained speakers include:
Oxford
Worcester
Fife
Southport
Preston
London
Belper – Derbyshire
Perth
Reading
Norwich
Canterbury
Swinton
Riding Mill - Northumberland
Isle of Wight
Speakers will generally travel up to one hour from these locations.
3. And finally, publicity:
Once your talk is confirmed with a speaker you can start your publicity. Unless your talk is for an existing group and will be at your regular meeting time i.e. Rotary club or University society.
A few ideas:
Put up posters
Email around your friends
Contact your local paper and radio station
Local churches/schools/ and other interest groups often have free newsletters and will be delighted to be provided with interesting content for them!
Or if you feel like getting technical then invite all of your friends on facebook by creating a facebook event page!
