I have been an active supporter of Greenpeace for over 20 years now, and something which has always concerned me is the relative lack of knowledge about Greenpeace among ordinary members of the public.
I think this is partly because of the largely conservative and easily bored media in this country, but also because Greenpeace has always tended to let its actions speak for themselves rather than actively promote itself as an organisation. This is a shame because Greenpeace has become a highly effective organisation while staying true to its core principles of non-violence and complete independence. (It also gives you the opportunity to walk into a supermarket dressed as a cow).
I was therefore delighted when the “Greenspeaker” idea was proposed, and I was selected as one of the first batch to be trained. I have so far talked to groups ranging in size from 2 to 150, and other speakers are doing similar things all over the country. Now, I’m looking forward to the moment on a street stall when someone says, “Oh yes, I heard a talk about Greenpeace once”.
