It’s not often you find an orang-utan in the queue of your local Kentucky Fried Chicken. Even rarer to find two. But last Saturday, KFC’s fast food restaurant in the Tottenham Court Road was visited by two of the homeless primates as part of a new campaign launched by Greenpeace.
Greenpeace research has discovered that a company used by KFC to make all its paper packaging was using illegally logged timber from Indonesia rainforests – a process that is threatening the habitat of orang-utans and the rare Sumatran tiger. So a fragile habitat is being trashed to make fast food containers that end up as trash. What a rubbish idea.
Despite being approached by Greenpeace, KFC has remained tight-lipped about the issues, so last Saturday five London activists – including Camilla from Greenwich – arrived at one of the company’s central London outlets armed with two orang-utans and a 7-ft replica KFC nugget bucket featuring a chainsaw-wielding Colonel Sanders and the words emblazoned: KFC is turning rainforests into rubbish’.
