If you're free on the evening of Wednesday 7th September, a very interesting public meeting is being held in Greenwich to discuss the ongoing disaster at the Fukushima nuclear power station in Japan. In particular, the debate will discuss whether the government should have given the go-ahead for ten nuclear reactors to be built in the UK before the full facts of Fukushima have emerged.
This not a Greenpeace event but it comes just a few weeks after Greenpeace announced that it is launching a high court challenge on the grounds that the government has failed to fully consider the cause of Fukushima and the effects of the radiation discharges before giving the green lights to a new generation of reactors in the UK. (Basically, it's impossible for anyone to fully evaluate the disaster at the moment because the reactors are still unstable and emitting high levels of radiation).
The speaker at the public meeting is John Large, an engineer who has an extensive knowledge of nuclear accidents and will be able to give us a better idea of the current situation at Fukushima and the long-term implications for Japan and the UK.
The event is from 7.30 - 9pm at Mycenae House, 90 Mycenae Road, SE3 7SE
If I don't see you at the debate, I very much hope to see you at the September Greenwich Greenpeace meeting which will be on Tuesday 13th September at 8pm, King's Arms pub, King William Walk, Greenwich, SE10. Our meetings are open to all.
