Airplot tree planting in Walthamstow with Neil Gerrad MP

Posted by Esther Freeman - 21 November 2009 at 4:24pm - Comments

On a sunny autumn morning children from Hillyfield's Primary School and Walthamstow MP, Neil Gerrard, joined volunteers from Greenpeace in planting a 'runway' tree as part of the Airplot campaign against the expansion of Heathrow.

The tree in Walthamstow will be twinned with one in Sipson, the village threatened with destruction if the proposed third runway goes ahead. The tree is a sign of solidarity between the residents of Walthamstow and those of Sipson.

Neil Gerrard, who is already a beneficial owner of the plot of land owned by Greenpeace on the site of the third runway, explained why he supported the campaign: "I just don't believe we need more runways at Heathrow, it's as simple as that. I think we should be looking to disuade people from flying when they don't really need to. There are a lot of internal flights that go on that are unnecessary if we've got high speed rail, and I really don't think we need more runways in the south east."
