A bit of monkey business on a sunny Sunday in Islington

Posted by Esther Freeman - 18 April 2010 at 5:54pm - Comments

Today the Islington group were at the Farmer's Market on Chapel Street to campaign against Nestle. The food giant is using palm oil in products, such as Kit-Kats, sourced from suppliers who are destroying rainforests in Indonesia. As well as causing havoc with the climate, the destruction of these rainforests is disasterous for the orangutan, and other wildlife, who live there.

Although other companies have been making efforts to  move away from using palm oil from these vulnerable sources, Nestle have done nothing. An international Greenpeace campaign has been running for several weeks now, but this weekend it was the turn of Islington residents to add their voices.

Over 150 people signed cards asking Nestle to give the rainforests and the orangutans a break. We also went 'ape' with the camera to create some personal monkey messages for the Nestle directors. A full gallery of images will be up on Flickr shortly.

If you want to add your voice then you can take action by visiting the Nestle campaign page.

Our day of palm oil action comes in the lead up to the Ask the Climate Question Islington election hustings, which take place tomorrow at City University. Please do come along to the event to ask your local election candidates your climate questions. If you can't make it then you can follow the action live on Twitter.
