Does any of this make any difference?

Posted by Esther Freeman - 22 July 2010 at 3:12pm - 2 Comments

Out campaigning on the streets of Islington the other day, one passer by said, 'Does any of this make any difference? 'Does BP even know about any of this?' Of course I answered in the affirmative, but I'll let you in to a secret - I do sometimes wonder!

It's not that I don't believe in campaigning or activism - from Airplot to Emily Pankhurst, history shows it does make a difference. However sometimes, when you're out on the streets of Islington, so far removed from the scene of the crime, you can feel a bit distanced from it all.

So when an opportunity arose to take our tar sands messages directly to BP I jumped at the chance. It was a windy, sneezy, pollen filled day, but myself and the Islington group volunteers were not put off. We set off to BP's central London offices armed with our tar sands banners, some flyers and a gritted determination to stop them investing in tar sands.

We were met by Tim and Rachel from Greenpeace UK, and also Amanda and Ivan from Greenpeace Edinburgh. Although the London groups meet up quite a bit, getting together with local Greenpeace groups from so far away was really great. It made me feel  part of a really big movement, that yes, really does make a difference.

And you could see it on the faces of the staff at BP. It was the third day in a row that Greenpeace activists had been peacefully campaigning outside their offices. As we smiled and handed out leaflets, we gave a cheerful wink that said, get used to it because we're not going away anytime soon.

Local Greenpeace groups will be continuing to campaign outside BP HQ in central London until 30th July. If you'd like to go along and lend a hand get in touch. Everyone can make a difference.

Great post Esther!

I agree entirely - I love these occasions when you "realise" (even though you've always known it) that people from all accross the country have the same passion and motivation as you do, as it is easy to lose sight of the "bigger picture" when you're out on the streets.
