It’s the New Year! As a Greenpeace activist, I am one year old. So now is a timely opportunity for me to reflect on my first year as a Greenpeace activist. In terms of activism, 2011 has been truly empowering for me. I became an “on the ground” Greenpeace activist in Jan 2011 and have never looked back.
Being a Greenpeace activist entails many different things. With my local group (Islington) I have spoken to thousands of people on the streets on a variety of environmental campaigns to build up signatures for important petitions. Some campaigns met their objectives in 2011 whereas others we will continue to take forward in 2012. I lobbied my MP, took part in non violent direct actions and have been awed by the power of non violent civil disobedience. I have helped raised funds for the world’s first crowd funded purpose built environmental campaigning ship – the Rainbow Warrior 3. In Nov 2011, I had the honour to spend a day on her when she docked in London. And through the year, I have met so many wonderful, intelligent, like-minded people that I start 2012 with a renewed sense of optimism that together we can change the world for the better.
If you have been meaning to get involved for a while, don’t hesitate and come join Greenpeace Islington at our first meeting of the year on Tuesday, 10 Jan. I promise you will be in for an amazing ride. We will be meeting at The Regent, Liverpool Road, N1 at 19:30. We will be rounding up recent activities and will be planning ahead for the next month or so. We have had lots of successes in 2011 but we still have many more important campaigns to continue.
New faces are always welcome. After the meeting, we will be hanging around for drinks and pizzas!
Hope to see you on the 10th!
