John West tuna

Back in November we blogged about our tuna research in supermarkets across North East London. That research was submitted to Greenpeace HQ who used the information to compile their Tuna League Table, based on how honest supermarkets were being about how tuna was being caught.

Following the release of the league table almost all of the companies agreed to take action to make their tuna supplies more sustainable. All that is except John West, who have subbornly refused to budge on the issue.

On visiting a local health food store in North East London one of our active supporters spotted some John West tuna on the shelves. She spoke to the owners about John West and their fishing practices. The owner had no idea that John West had such an unethical policy, and said she would cancel her order with them immediately. A small but perfect victory.

Then came the more exciting news: stickers were spotted on tins of John West tuna in Waitrose Islington and the store have also decided to stop stocking John West tuna.

Maybe now John West will get the message that consumers and retailers will not tolerate their unsustainable fishing practices.

For more information about what is wrong with John West tuna and to take action visit the Fish Fight campaign page.

Great news! Do you know if this is the one by Angel or Holloway Road or both?
