And now for something completely different

On Sunday the Merseyside network did something different - we went to Hilbre Island , a nature reserve and SSI , for our annual sponsored walk.

Saturday had been a glorious day , but Sunday was something else! Our intrepid walkers braved wind and rain to walk from West Kirkby out to the island which is in the Dee estuary and can only be reached once the tide has gone out.

Despite the conditions we made it out there and back before the mist came in which we could see approaching as we made our way back. It is a beautiful place ( better still on a nice sunny day ) and we saw many different species of birds and the grey seals that live in the area hauling out onto the sandbanks as the tide went out. Probably because of the foulness of the day we were the only people on the island, which is a first in all the years that we have visited.

Sponsored walks don't raise the money that they used to back in the days of the " Walk for the Whales" which was a national event , but whatever we raise will go towards Greenpeace campaigns and we had a really good day out at the same time.
