Dr Miguel Maqueda - one of our speakers

On Monday 22 April , Earth Day , more than 70 people joined us at the Light Cinema , New Brighton , for a special showing of James Balog's wonderful film " Chasing Ice"

We were very pleased to have 2 guest speakers , Dr Miguel Maqueda , a sea ice specialist and Amy Rutland , a local Greenpeace activist. Dr Maqueda gave a superb presentation which explained the science behind climate change and how that is affecting the Arctic and its implications for all of us. Amy Rutland told us about the Greenpeace Direct action in Edinburgh last year where Shell petrol stations were closed down which she was involved in

Our polar bears were on hand and many of the people who attended the event showed their support for the Greenpeace " Save the Arctic" campaign by having their photographs taken with speech bubbles proclaiming " I love Arctic"

It was a brilliant night and we are grateful to Phil Dove, the Manager of the Light Cinema , for allowing us to stage the event , to our two wonderful speakers and to the people who came along to the support the event.
