Action on a mellow Monday morning

Centrica's Big Bill

On Monday the 30th of April me and the rest of the Greenpeace crew gave Centrica, the parent company of British Gas, a taste of their own medicine, by delivering to their doorstep the biggest energy bill the world has ever seen!

A report by Bloomberg rated Centrica bottom of the renewables league with only 2.3% share of UK capacity despite having more domestic customers than any other utility and also consistently making the highest profit margin.

Industry lobbying has created a myth that it's renewables that are pushing up domestic energy prices and managed to persuade George Osbourne to claim that the future is gas and yet it's the escalating price of gas which has put an extra £100 on the average annual dual fuel bill. While only about 2% of that bill is down to renewable energy support.

I was among one of many Greenpeace volunteers who helped shut the Centrica HQ down, whilst a smaller group managed to get inside the building and left some more bills pasted to the walls in order that Centrica don’t forget our message.

I feel that this action came at an important time, where there’re millions of people suffering from fuel poverty due to hiked up energy prices in the UK.  On Monday we gave those people a voice, telling big energy companies around the world that the people won’t sit back and be ignored and left to suffer while huge energy companies rake in millions of pounds a year.

Take things into your own hands, and tell Centrica to stop ripping us off!!
