Greenpeace ship, the Arctic Sunrise has been in the Arctic this summer bearing witness to the deep sea drilling that companies like Shell and Gazprom are attempting in this fragile and pristine environment.
On Wednesday 18th of September two Activists scaled the side of the Gazprom rig in an attempt to stage a protest against the ongoing drilling for oil, after warning shots were fired at them by Russian coast guards they halted their attempt and gave themselves up to the border guards.
On Thursday 19th September around 15 armed Russian personal boarded the Arctic Sunrise, assaulted the crew and forced them into the mess room and attempted to force the captain to steer the ship to a Russian port. Upon his refusal the ship was towed for five days to the North-eastern port of Murmansk, where they have been charged today (26th of September) and remanded in custody for up to 2 months.
