I have recently joined the Newcastle Greenpeace Group, after attending a local community festival. I came across Greenpeace around four years ago when I was studying aboard in England. In that time Greenpeace were having a campaign of GM food. It was a very interesting topic for me as my major is in Ecology. Moreover, some other information of Greenpeace came from a friend of mine who working in the Greenpeace boat.
However, I had been passive for the last four years until recently in the Greenpeace movement. I met a member from ‘Greenpeace Newcastle’ in the Green Festival, and been informed of a local group meeting in the next day. What a coincident!? I joined the meeting and met more people who are not only very friendly, but also show passion for the environment and social justice. Luckily, I got another chance to meet more people from Greenpeace after the monthly meeting in Newcastle - a Skill Share meeting in the historic town York.
I was a bit nervous to attend the Northern Group Meeting in York, as I am very new (only 1 week old) to Greenpeace. Yet, again the friendliness of the members from different Northern regions made me feel welcome in the meeting. It was a meeting for Greenpeace campaign experience sharing. Although, I do not have the experience, it was a good chance to learn and know more about Greenpeace. They have lots of good ideas, strategies and skills of how to run a successful campaign, one of them is for example using internet social network. One strategy stood out on the day on how to attract more people to join a campaign, by posting an interesting picture (according to research, animal especially cat attract people most) with a short message. A very powerful way and also it is fun to make it. Here is an example on how I utilise the skill from the post-event for practice.
