After a week of emotional and frantic developments, there is some respite until at least Sunday when some of the crew of the Greenpeace ship the Arctic Sunrise will have further hearings. Everyone involved in the organisation is left shell-shocked yet there is no time for contemplation as climate change is not going to wait for us, instead we are reminded why we do this with the publishing of the Fifth assessment report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report, a Summary for Policy Makers.
The IPCC report has looked at all the scientific investigations that have occurred since the last report in 2007 in order to distinguish what is happening to our climate and how we are affecting it. The findings are obvious, they are 95% certain that humans have caused the warming in the atmosphere since the mid-20th century; unfortunately the language of science does not translate into the layman’s terms easily. A common misconception is that the other 5% alludes to it being a natural occurrence; instead the scientists are just less certain of this remaining percentage. The IPCC report is just a reminder of the bigger picture, a footnote of why I feel compelled to write this and express myself, we are in trouble and unless we awake from the slumber of our lives very soon there will not be much to live for.
In Australia the Great Barrier Reef, one of the Seven Wonders of the World is in the way of what some term “progress”, coal for the Far Eastern market, a much needed boost for the economy. But at what cost? The destruction of the largest living organism in the world, a place that provides much needed nutrients for countless marine species, is it really worth it? Again we find that in the way of this “progress” stands Greenpeace an organisation berated around the world for letting its activists peacefully put their lives on the line for the hope of a better future, again committed to peaceful resistance for the simple hope that our children may have a positive future on this planet we all love so much.
