The government's austerity measures are dismantling the cities and towns of the north- east. At the wonderful Northern stage in the heart of Newcastle , Sept. 14th is a day where we all come together. The People's Assembly is where those of us fed up with this government and its dismantling of the welfare state and local communities can meet and become stronger in numbers. Whether you are a student, an- ex- soldier, an artist, performer, or writer, a carer, disabled, a parent, a teacher or NHS worker, a pensioner, a jobseeker, employed but fearing redundancy, on benefits, a member of a political group or party or trade union; or just an individual feeling the loss of the north- east's swimming baths, libraries, respite care centres, youth groups, parks, museums and galleries, theatres and arts venues, the People's Assembly day is for you. It includes optional arts / drama workshops, and a great evening show with national and local performers.
The North East People's Assembly will bring together opponents of austerity from a wide range of organisations and backgrounds across north-east England. It is a day for speeches, discussions and planning, with a mix of rallies, workshop sessions and cultural activites. Speakers include writer and commentator Owen Jones, Northern TUC regional secretary Beth Farhat and Newcastle Unison's Paul Gilroy.
We urge everyone who wants bigger, broader and more co-ordinated resistance to savage Tory cuts to participate. This regional event is part of the national People's Assembly movement, building on the hugely successful People's Assembly in Westminster in June.
There will be opening and closing plenary sessions. In between we will have a couple of workshop slots, with 4 options in each slot. These workshops are organised in association with particular campaign groups (noted in brackets below). During each workshop slot there will also be a cultural event (details to be confirmed).
