Detox China

Posted by windfish - 18 November 2012 at 6:33pm - Comments

Hello Folks!

China is one of the biggest polluters in the world, with massive industry, yet very few environmental regulations. With their new government in place, will they rise to the challenge of reducing their environmental damage? The Beijing Olympics showed that this was a smoking, smoggy dragon – perhaps now there is a new regime they’ll clean up their act and become a smoke and toxic material-free dragon? Companies say, “We fully comply with all the legal obligations of the countries that we operate in”, which sounds fine, until you find out that the countries that they operate in don’t have any legal obligations.

Last year Greenpeace International started a campaign to clean things up. Details can be found here: http://www.greenpeace.org/international/en/campaigns/toxics/water/detox/intro/

Companies like Nike and Marks & Spencer signed up to the pledge, but we need to keep pressure on the Chinese government to improve conditions for its people and the environment. To find out more about what Greenpeace UK is doing regarding this challenge, see: http://www.greenpeace.org.uk/detox

Stay toxic material free!
