News just in: two of the Arctic 30 have been charged with piracy! The charges have been laid against one crew member of the Arctic Sunrise, Ana Paula Almninhala from Brazil and UK freelance videographer Kieron Bryan. The sentence could be 15 years in a Russian jail - a charge which is completely disproportionate and represents an assult on the concept of peaceful protest.
We have been asked to be very careful about what we say in our blogs in case it makes things worse but it couldn't get much worse for Ana and Kieran. You can imagine what I am thinking and you are probably thinking the same as well. If you have raised your voice or written a letter about something you feel really strongly about and haven't signed the email to the Russian Embassy yet then do so now and if you haven't ever written a letter of protest or signed a petition then now is the time to start.
Experts on international law and the international law of the sea all agree that what our brave activists did is not piracy. Piracy involves acts of violence or detention. Neither were true of Greenpeace but.....
I won't say any more. Just sign the email and get all your friends to do the same.
