A good day out at the Big Wheel

So when we were invited to this event we jumped at the chance - an opportunity to talk to loads of people about our campaign to save the Arctic and stop Shell drilling for oil there.  But when we got there we found it was sponsored by E-On we were a bit surprised but what hey, we had come to talk about the Arctic and this was a good opportunity.

Like minded people and a sunny day (I just about remember what one of those was).  We set up the stall and the E-On photographer came around photographing all the other stalls but strangely he rushed past us without stopping!  There were bikes everywhere and cyclists and walkers and everyone except one abusive character was very friendly and supportive.

Many joined the campaign on the spot by texting Arctic plus their name to our free text number 60002 and loads more took leaflets away with them.  The kids loved the stickers we had and I had a game with myself to see if I could guess which sticker they would take.  Little girls went for either the arctic fox one or the snowy owl.  The fox is cute and the owl was on a pink background.  Boys liked the walrus or the polar bear.

Poor Paula the polar bear was on occasion mugged by small children wanting to hug her or stroke her and at one time she was stalked by a small boy of about 2 years old who followed her around and grabbed her leg every time she stopped.  There were lots of other human-shaped animals there too and the Panthers mascot was particularly supportive but Zebby the zebra was a bit to friendly!

You can see how he and Paula got on if you take a look at the photos of the day on our Flickr site.  Many of the parents took photos of their children with Paula.  I asked them to post the picture on their Facebook pages and add the link to our campaign page.  I hope they do and I hope the message is spread further and wider today as a result of our efforts.
