Greenpeace Notts Strike Shell For 2nd Time This Week!

Posted by petergray1989 - 23 June 2012 at 2:55pm - Comments

That's right folks! We are hot on Shell's case here in Nottingham. Following the successful action at the Shell Petrol Station in Carlton on Monday Sean, Meg, Liana and I went down to Priory Roundabout Station near Lenton Park.

I handed the letter explaining the action to the duty manager and she was extremely friendly and happy for us to carry out our action (as they have all seemed to be so far!). Meg and Sean had a brief run in with a motorist who was a bit cross that he had taken the "Shell Out Of Order" sign literally. When he calmed down enough to listen to what we were telling him about what we were actually doing and why we were doing it though, he took a leaflet enthusiastically and praised our good work! Good turnaround Meg and Sean!

We stayed for two hours and got rid of an enormous stack of leaflets. The old 'two on the entry two on the exit' seemed to be the way forward and between the four of us I think we managed to catch most people. We were even able to catch people as they stopped at the traffic lights passing by! There was a great deal of support with thumbs up and papping of car horns.

This just goes to show that those who want Shell to stay out of the Arctic are in the minority. After all, who wants to see suffering on the scale that would be witnessed if there were a spill? A spill has been given a 1 in 5 chance to occur over the predicted lifetime of arctic drilling activities. These kinds of odds are simply unnacceptable.

I hope that our efforts today have been just one more step towards mobilising a global voice of condemnation of Arctic drilling not just by Shell, but by any other short sighted, greedy company who thinks they fancy a game of roulette. You have to shout really loud to turn the head of the United Nations and I know that we can do it!
