In a previous blog we told you about how we campaigned on Trident in Rushcliffe, the constitency of Ken Clarke, MP. We got 310 polling cards collected and 97% of them said that we should not replace Trident. We presented the poll to the Green Party candidate who gave us a quote and made arrangements to see the Labour candidate, Andrew Claysworth. We have since met with Andrew as you can see in the picture, and while he personally opposes the replacement of Trident is obliged to follow the party line and he muttered something about unilateral disarmament. He is not the only Labour candidate who opposes Trident it would seem so things may change. We have also made arrangements to see the Lib Dem candidate, Karrar Khan next week. At the moment the Lib Dems are saying they will not renew Trident but won't get rid of the current Trident, only maintain it and Cllr Khan is sticking to that line. Well, let's face it, it's never been used and has one careful owner. It's probably got an MOT as well!
Desite several attempts by phone and email we were finally told that Ken was not interested in meeting us, despite the poll being carried out in his constituency and me being one of his constituents. I don't think I need say any more on that issue only that Rushcliffe is one of the safest seats in the country and Ken has a majority of 13,000.
We got our poll in the Nottingham Evening post in a highly edited article which cut out all references to anything to do with party candidate results and had no photo either. Again, hardly surprising.
