In 2011, year 2 students at Firfield Primary School read a book together called 'Dear Greenpeace'. I'm sure a lot of you will have heard of it. For those who haven't it's about a child who finds a whale in the garden pond and writes to Greenpeace to find out how to look after it.
This has sparked an interest in the children, and they decided they wanted to know more about Greenpeace. They decided to invite a volunteer from Greenpeace into the school so that they could ask some questions to find out more about the organisation and what it does. Luckily one of their teachers, Mrs Gray, has a son who is a Greenpeace volunteer. He is the author of this blog post!
To the amazement of their teachers, the year 2 children sat patiently for a whole hour enthusiastically asking me questions and sharing their experiences and knowledge with me. There were around 50 of them, and they asked some really interesting questions including how we raise our money, and how we manage to make the changes that we make in the world.
It was such a pleasure to have the opportunity to talk to the children. It was great to see how enthusiastic they are about nature and the planet. They have even set up their own Greenpeace Office roleplay, which you can see in the picture above. I'm sure the folks at Greenpeace HQ will like the opening hours on the sign they have put up! (9:30-3:00 Mon-Fri, Closed Sat-Sun). The children are now thinking about ways they could raise money for Greenpeace to help us do our important work, and after Easter they will be looking to put some of these ideas into practice.
I wish them every success in their fund raising efforts and hope to stay in touch!
