Hav you been watching the programme about penguins callsd Spy in the Huddle on BBC1, with all the penguin cams? Doesn't it make you laugh? What is it about penguins that makes us love them so? Obvioulsy it's the way they walk but it's also the way they care for their young and the fact that most of them mate for life. Yes, we all love penguins but they, like polar bears at the opposite end of the planet are in danger. Not from climate change, although that is obviously important, it's from Carol Vordeman! Yes, the former star of Countdown is promoting a food supplement called Red Krill Oil that is made from tiny crustacea (shrimps and the like) and it is the staple diet of penguins, seals and the great whales. We have already got a moratorium in place to protect the landmass of the Antarctic but the seas are not protected.Massive factory ships are heading south to cash in on this new superfood. And what is more sickening is that this hoovering up of these microscopic creatures is regarded as sustainable. Humans have reached new depths litearlly and metaphorically when we are prepared to dredge the very bottom of the food chain like this. So there are two things you can do to start with: firstly join Hugh's Fish Fight if you haven't already and join the campaign to get marine reserves put in place. Secondly you can sign the petition of the Antarctic Ocean Alliance which is also dedicated to introducing a network of marine reserves around the Antarctic.
