Nottingham Peoples Hustings

Normally a blog is about people's ideas and experiences but I am writing about something else as I don't know where else to put this information - it could be an event but it isn't organised by us or attended by us so probably here is the best place.....I found out about them from an email a friend sent me so to save time I have done a quick cut and paste of the main points of the hustings,,,,,,,,, Nottingham is to host a high profile People’s Hustings designed to breathe further life into the new style face-to-face engagement between politicians and public at election time.  The People’s Hustings, which is being promoted by Speakers’ Corner Trust (SCT) in association with the Nottingham Evening Post, will take place at Speakers’ Corner in King Street from 12.30 to 1.30 pm on Tuesday 4 May and will give Nottingham East  Parliamentary candidates the opportunity to respond to a set of short speeches from community representatives. The Hustings goes an important step further by enabling the public rather than the politicians to set the agenda.

A range of voluntary groups will be setting out their priorities for the next government and members of the public will be given a chance to voice their opinions before the candidates are asked to respond to what they have heard. Topics to be covered are: business and the economy, poverty, the environment, asylum/refugees and youth issues. The Liberal Democrat, Labour and Conservative candidates for Nottingham East have all confirmed their participation. The UKIP and Green Party representatives have been informed about the debate but have not confirmed their attendance.

So if you work in Nottingham, take a lunchtime trip to Market Square and Speakers corner (by the Brian Clough statue if you didn't know) and indulge in a bit of political nostalgia - audience participation a must.
