Anyone fancy going to this lecture?? It’s free. RSVP asap. Tuesday 22 September 20095.30pm for a 6.00pm start Sustainable Energy without the Hot Air Featuring guest speaker Professor David MacKay of Cambridge University, author of ‘Sustainable Energy without the Hot Air’ No 1 Nottingham Science ParkJesse Boot AvenueOff University BoulevardNottinghamNG7 2RU www.nottinghamsciencepark.co.uk Our Guest Speaker: Professor David MacKay is a physicist at the University of Cambridge who has made a serious, dispassionate attempt to work out the real figures for sustainable energy supply and use. His results, published in a book titled Sustainable Energy without the Hot Air is, uniquely, available completely free for full download (all 32 chapters of it) from www.withouthotair.com. Prof MacKay’s independent approach to the often emotional issues of wind and wave power etc., does not always make comfortable reading for those committed to renewable energy generation. But his book is, importantly, written in jargon-free English and has got people talking. As he writes, “My aim here is to present honest, factualnumbers in such a way that the numbers are comprehensible, comparable and memorable.” The Guardian, in one of its ‘In Praise of…’ editorials, said that Prof MacKay, “has written a book that is accessible rather than professional, but most of all it is necessary.” The Sunday Times said that the book, “has become an unlikely hit among economists, politicians and anyone else with an interest in energy policy and climate change.” The Climate Change Seminars: These seminars are linked by an assumption: that science and scientists are playing a positive role by producing solutions to help mitigate the impact of climate change. Carbon capture and sequestration, new technologies to harness solar, wind and wave power; more energy efficient homes and cars – all these part-solutions, and many more, are fundamentally the products of scientific research and analysis (although allied to innovative engineering and in some cases politically led). The seminar series are being held quarterly and are designed to promote debate and discussion about these important issues while also encouraging networking among individuals drawn from science, business, academia and other interested communities. The Venue: No.1 Nottingham Science Park is one of the newest business locations in Nottingham and is helping the city realise its aspiration to become one of the UK’s premier locations for science and technology enterprise. Built by developers Blueprint, it incorporates low energy design, a brown roof, a biomass boiler and a public access lily pad walk featuring sustainable drainage and linked to a nature reserve. Details: a light finger buffet and drinks will be available; networking is encouraged; invited guests include prominent local figures from business, academia, science and environmental groups. Registration: This event is FREE, however prior registration is essential. Please register by calling or e-mailing Vanessa Corns at vc@nde.org.uk or by calling (0115) 934 9582 no later than Monday 7th September 2009.
