Went to Nottingham Trent University on 10 Feb to see Prof Mike Hulme deliver a lecture based on his book "Why we disagree about climate change". He talked about how people "frame" their opinions on the causes of climate change and hence "frame" their views on the solutions, amongst other things. He listed 6 "frames" as far as I can remember:
1. Business/the markets - it's up to business and the markets to solve
2. Consumption - we should consume less
3. Adaptation - we should learn to adapt
4. Human/animal rights - there should be equality for all, balance out the injustice.
5. Apocolyptical - there's nothing we can do we're all doomed - run to the hills!
6. Tipping points - can't wait for human behaviour to change, no time, so we'll have to send mirrors up into space or blast clouds of steam into the air to stop climate change now.
This background might help when we communicate with the public.. I see sense in this.
He has written a book see link: http://mikehulme.org/
