Will all the Dave's please sit on one side of the table

At our last Greenpeace group meeting, we discussed two blogs, both by friends of mine and both called Dave, in which they considered the way Greenpeace activists are perceived by the public.

The fact that they were both called Dave brought back a memory of years past when I first moved to Nottingham and joined the local group.  There were already two Dave’s in the group and a new member turned up who also happened to be called Dave so we decided that to save confusion all the Daves should sit on the same side of the table.

Now this does not mean you have to be called Dave to be a Greenpeace activist, nor does it mean you have to have strict ‘green’ credentials.  We don’t operate a ‘Dave only’ policy and we don’t vet you on how green your lifestyle is.

Megan said at the meeting she was a bit worried because she came to the meeting by car and felt guilty about it.  But as we said to her, the important thing is that she is there and wants to do something to protect our planet.

So we all thought about how we are bad hippies……..lots of people confessed to using a car more often than they would like to, Liana and David (see we still have a David) both have to use their cars for work.  Sean drives a van for work.  Most of us admitted to shopping at a supermarket and Jay says he doesn’t take his own bags so has to use the plastic ones supplied.  Julie admitted to a luxury we all love – sitting in a nice hot bath rather than a quick shower.  Many of us eat meat and Albert says he travels too much by plane but then he does come from Majorca and still has family there.

So you can see we are ordinary people but we share a passion to do something extraordinary to save the planet.  Don’t feel shy.  Come along and meet us – we guarantee you won’t be judged and you might even like us and want to join us.

If you're called Dave and would like to get active with Greenpeace then please get in touch with your local coordinator on the Get Active page. Simply enter your postcode, write a short message to say hello, come along to the next meeting and volunteer to help out. You'll never look back.
