Traditional local variety of apple tree planted to twin with airplot

Yesterday I went with members of Nottingham Greenpeace group to Brewhouse Yard in Nottingham to plant an apple tree to twin with the Greenpeace orchard at Sipson.  Nottingham City Council stipulated that it should be a local variety of apple and so the group decided on a Pickerings seedling which is a desert apple from around 100 years ago and local to Nottinghamshire.  The weather was horrible - wet and windy but we managed to plant the apple tree with the help of Cllr Katrina Bull who is the portfolio holder for climate change and sustainability and also Robin Hood (who appears courtesy of the Sherwood Forest Trust).  I'm sure if Robin were alive today he would be an eco activist - he certainly knows his trees! Cllr Bull was very interested in the aviation campaign and we spent a long time afterwards talking to her about it.  She now wants to plant another tree next to our tree and is talking of an urban orchard in Radford.  If that ever happens perhaps we should twin the two orchards!  Robin himself is joining forces with the Sheriff of Nottingham - bet you never saw that coming - to plant locally grown oak trees in Sherwood Forest as part of national tree week which starts on 25th November.  Perhaps Greenpeace should have waited a week to have their national twinning campaign to link in with national tree week.
