The future of
Trident
Objective of the Meeting:
The recent Strategic Defence and Security Review announced significant changes for
the UK’s nuclear weapons system. The speakers will lead a discussion on the
implications of these changes for the Trident replacement programme, whether the
UK still needs an expensive nuclear arsenal, and what cheaper and simpler
alternatives might be available.
Speakers:
Sir Hugh Beach spent 40 years in the British Army, including service in World War
II. Later he spent three years as director of the Council for Arms Control. He is now
on the management committees of the British Pugwash Group, VERTIC,
ACRONYM and the Council for Christian Approaches to Defence and Disarmament.
Dr Nick Ritchie is a Research Fellow at the Bradford Disarmament Research Centre
within the Department of Peace Studies, University of Bradford specialising in
nuclear proliferation, control and disarmament. He previously worked for the Oxford
Research Group and is now Hon. Secretary of the British Pugwash Group.
