Core support for Trident replacement crumbling?

Posted by bpeter_101 - 27 September 2012 at 3:24pm - Comments

Recent media reports are showing opposition to the programme for replacing the UK's Trident nuclear weapons from some highly unexpected quarters.  The Independent newspaper reports that top military chiefs no longer want money to be spent on new nuclear weapons, and columnist Peter Hitchens, writing in the Daily Mail, asks: "So why do we continue to maintain this vast apparatus for destroying Moscow, called Trident? I have no idea".

It's now only a handful of politicians on the right-wing fringe (in both the Conservative and Labour Parties) who are calling for the UK to develop new nuclear weapons.  The task now is to get the majority in each party to face down the nuclear fanatics and commit their parties to a policy which is a guaranteed vote winner: cancel the ginormously expensive Trident replacement project and spend the money on community services instead.
