Last October the coalition government ran a Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR). One of its conclusions was that the political (or ‘main gate’) decision about whether the UK should build a new generation of nuclear weapons will be delayed until 2016, i.e. after until the next election.
The Liberal Democrats claimed this as a major victory. However, using the freedom of information act, Greenpeace has forced the release of documents which show that in reality the MoD is poised to place Trident replacement contracts worth billions. These include contracts for nuclear reactors, fire and combat systems, even steel for the hull.
We are inviting Greenpeace supporters who are an active part of this Peace & Disarmament network, or who are trained political lobbyists to contact their MPs and/or local Lib Dem groups. For a full briefing please see (link not yet live).
