The North West Evening Mail is an interesting newspaper. It is the local paper which covers the Barrow area, where the BAE Systems shipyard is located which would build replacement submarines for Trident - if the government ever scrapes together enough money to place the order.
Barrow is very much a company town, with BAE Systems by far the largest local employer. With the Sellafield nuclear reprocessing plant also close by, the paper covers a lot of nuclear news stories, and not surprisingly, is rarely critical of the nuclear industry.
It's interesting to see that the paper has covered the Liberal Democrats manifesto by leading on the Trident issue - and in terms which are far from hostile.
Maybe the message is getting through that times are changing, and that Trident replacement is far from a done deal?
