Over recent years the number of nuclear warheads in the world has been reduced drastically as the result of various treaty agreements, but if we are to succeed in getting rid of nuclear weapons for good the governments of the world will need to sign up to a Nuclear Weapons convention.
A Nuclear Weapons Convention would be a binding international agreement that would outlaw the use or possession of nuclear weapons and set out a roadmap for global disarmament. It's only a matter of time until such an agreement will be reached - but the nuclear weapons states are doing their best to drag their feet in the hope that they will be able to cling on to their weapons of mass destruction for a couple more decades.
There's no reason why the UK shouldn't support the negotiation of a Nuclear Weapons Convention - it's perfectly consistent with the government's stated goal of "multilateral" nuclear disarmament. So why not join the call for the UK to support a Nuclear Weapons Convention?
You can have your say on the government's e-petitions site, where the Abolition 2000 campaign have started a petition about the Nuclear Weapons Convention - just click here and follow the instructions on the petition website. A petition needs over 100,000 signatures before the government will consider it, though - so put the word around to others who may be interested!
Find out more at the INLAP - World Court Project website, where you can also sign up to make your own affirmation that any use of nuclear weapons would be a war crime.
