Redundant nuclear subs awaiting decommissioning

The Ministry of Defence has started a programme of public consultation on options for dismantling nuclear powered submarines which have left service with the Royal Navy, which are heavily contaminated with radioactive waste.

Two sites have been proposed for dismantling of the submarines - the naval dockyards at Rosyth and Devonport.

Full details about the consultation are available on the Ministry of Defence website.  The Nuclear Submarine Forum, an independent network of non-government organisations with an interest in the Navy's nuclear submarine programme, is encouraging local groups and individuals to take part in the consultation and has prepared a briefing on the MoD's proposals.
