First it was the Daily Mail, and now it's the Telegraph's turn. The bastions of the political right are queuing up to put the boot in to the government's plans to leave Trident replacement out of the Strategic Defence and Security Review.
At the weekend the Mail on Sunday published a poll showing that 63% of the public thought that nuclear weapons should be scrapped to save money. Today Alan Cochrane writes in his Daily Telegraph blog that the government must not protect Trident at the expense of the conventional armed forces. 'Saving Trident at the expense of soldiers may see voters go ballistic' is the title of the article, which points out that, by stating that Trident will not be included in the review, Liam Fox 'has assuredly made a rod for his and the Coalition Government’s back'.
Does the Defence Secretary have any friends at the moment?
