South Downs Green Fair

A great event, in a great space, with so many positive people. The annual Southdowns Green Fair held at the Sustainability centre, near Petersfield - once again attracted thousands of people and a wealth of stall holders - focusing on environmental, sustainable & green issues.

The sound of the passenger tractor from the car park, heralded new visitors arriving - and that was our cue for a very busy day on the Greenpeace stall. A very busy day, with a very special Arctic guest - a large, but friendly polar bear!

Our polar bear certainly helped to share Greenpeace's "save the arctic" campaign to young & old alike, but some people needed no introduction and just wanted to see everything that the rainbow warriors were championing.

That's one of the great things about actively volunteering with Greenpeace - it's the warmth of the supporters you meet and the way Greenpeace is greeted like an old friend - questions come thick & fast throughout the day:

"So how's Greenpeace doing?"
"Can I have a sticker?"
"Do you still have the ships?"
"Can I hug the bear"?
"How's the fish campaign?"
"Where's the local meeting?"
"Can I have another sticker?"
"How do I sign up?"

Kids want to meet the bear & wear their stickers with pride, grown ups sign up as "arctic defenders" and grab some leaflets, and some quietly drop coins or post a note into the collection pots.

A great day, a great event & a great way to meet + make contact with so many positive, caring people.

Thanks to everyone who came to say hello or had a bear hug!

Jay :)
