Today was actually a really productive meeting with my MP Mike Hancock. We talked green issues, we talked the Energy Bill (which is soon to make its way through parliament for it's second reading) and we talked about the future and decarbonising the electricity sector.
I actually quite like meeting Mike - he knows I came from Greenpeace and we have talked before about green issues and a way forward, a way that has a future for our planet.
He supports the decarbonising of the electricity sector and agrees with the Committee on Climate Change which has recommended a target of 50g of carbon per kilowatt hour by 2030. If we can do that then we can keep global warming below the 2 degree limit that all countries have agreed is a safe threshold.
He also supports the idea of green jobs for a sustainable future - and one that will create thousands of new jobs across the UK.
The Energy Bill is a really important piece of legislation that can really turn things around in the UK and send a message out to the rest of Europe and the world that the UK is serious about stopping climate change. As Ed Davey said in Sep 2012:
'The Liberal Democrats are not for turning [...]there's a strong case for a carbon limit for Britain's energy grid for 2030. Energy is always a long term investment. So if we are to create greater investor confidence in Britain's low carbon energy future, a long-term target is best.'
The future is going to work if we take things seriously - we can only do that by changing the system and to do that we continue to talk to politicians and industry to make the future greener and more sustainable.
